The automotive sector is undergoing a profound digital transformation. Increasing operational complexity, the need for efficiency, and the demand for technological integration are redefining how large automotive groups structure their internal systems.

It is in this context that one of Portugal’s largest automotive groups, with operations across multiple cities and a highly distributed structure, decided to modernise its internal systems and strengthen its technological capabilities.

To ensure this evolution in a sustainable and strategic way, the group relies on PrimeIT as its technology partner, using a Team Extension model.

The Client: Multibrand Automotive Group with National Presence

The client is a Portuguese automotive group operating in multiple areas: the sale of new and used vehicles, maintenance and repair services, parts sales, and vehicle rental.

With operations spread across various cities and multidisciplinary teams, the group heavily depends on internal tools developed over the years to support its business.

However, a significant part of these solutions was over a decade old, presenting challenges in terms of scalability, performance, code maintenance, and integration with new technologies.

The need was clear: modernise without compromising operational continuity.

The Challenge: Continuous Modernisation of Internal Tools and Websites

Since March 2022, PrimeIT has been involved in the project with the aim of developing and maintaining internal business support tools, gradually modernising legacy systems, and evolving some public websites.

The challenge is not only about developing new features. The main focus is on modernising a technological ecosystem with legacy code while ensuring stability, continuity of service, and progressive evolution.

This is a strategic and ongoing transformation, not an abrupt system replacement.

Partnership Model: Team Extension for Strategic Support

PrimeIT supports the project through a Team Extension model, directly reinforcing the client’s internal team with a developer specialised in frontend and backend technologies.

This approach allows full integration with the client’s internal team, effectively acting as an extension of their technological structure. By working side by side with the organisation’s members, the PrimeIT professional shares processes, tools, and priorities, ensuring direct alignment with business objectives and a deep understanding of operational needs.

The collaboration is close and fully integrated, embedding PrimeIT into the client’s processes and technological culture.

Technologies Used

The technological modernisation relies on a modern and robust stack:

– Vue.js: development of dynamic and reactive interfaces

– Nuxt.js: framework for building Vue applications

– Laravel (PHP): solid and scalable backend framework

– TypeScript and JavaScript: safer, more structured code

– Agile Methodology: incremental deliveries, continuous improvement, and constant adaptation

This approach enables a progressive evolution of the architecture, reducing technical debt and preparing the systems for future growth.

Main Challenges: Managing Legacy Code

One of the main challenges of the project is the existence of systems with more than ten years of continuous development.

The adopted strategy does not involve a radical replacement but rather phased migration and progressive refactoring, gradually modernising the architecture.

This model reduces risks and has ensured operational stability throughout the process, allowing the transformation to occur without negatively impacting day-to-day operations.

Partnership Impact: Sustained Acceleration of Digital Transformation

Although the project has been ongoing since March 2022, significant impacts are already visible:

– Accelerated digital transformation: modernised internal systems align operations with current technological standards.

– Improved operational efficiency: modern tools lead to more structured and effective processes.

– Continuous evolution: the Agile methodology ensures constant adaptation to business needs.

– Technological foundation for future growth: progressively modernised architecture prepares the group to integrate new solutions and scale operations.

The partnership has contributed to accelerating innovation and strengthening the organisation’s technological capabilities.

Modernising Internal Systems in the Automotive Sector: An Ongoing Process

This project demonstrates that digital transformation in large automotive groups requires strategy, planning, progressive modernisation, and solid technological partnerships.

Through the Team Extension model, PrimeIT plays an active role in this technological evolution, helping to make systems more robust, scalable, and future-ready.

The project remains ongoing and under continuous development. As new business needs arise, modernisation evolves alongside them, ensuring technological sustainability.

The eventual expansion of the team may accompany future development phases, further enhancing the impact of this strategic partnership.
