Artificial Intelligence has been around for over 50 years and is now developing faster than ever. The topic has been highly debated since the launch of the ChatGPT Artificial Intelligence system, which is taking the scientific community and the world population by surprise.

The adoration for ChatGPT soon led to the speculation that the tech giant Google was facing stiff competition for its leadership for the first time in years. Now comes Bard, the new Artificial Intelligence platform announced by Google.

Artificial Intelligence: What is it?

Considered the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a technological advancement that allows a machine to understand, act and learn with similar levels of human intelligence. This artificial intelligence enables independent decision-making, supported by digital data, and replicates human skills such as reasoning, learning, planning, and creativity.

AI systems can adapt their behaviour, perceive their environment, and solve problems. The system can receive data, process it, and answer autonomously in order to solve practical problems, simulate situations, and formulate responses.

The Reason Behind the Artificial Intelligence Hype

Inspired by science fiction, many people dream of the creation of Artificial Intelligence that can answer all the questions they have. ChatGPT has come close to that wish, revolutionising the tech world since its arrival on the market in November 2022.

ChatGPT has dominated the tech conversations of the past few months all around the world, increasing speculation about who would become its competition. After Open AI launched a test version of a system capable of summarising complex topics, writing poems, and even programming, Google has been under pressure, not only from the public but also from shareholders, to launch a chatbot with artificial intelligence.

The tech giant was not slow with its response: on February 6th, 2023, just three months after the launch of ChatGPT, Google announced a new Artificial Intelligence platform called Bard.

The Revolution of ChatGPT

Developed by the OpenAI company, supported by Microsoft, ChatGPT has completely taken over social media in recent weeks, with users showing the many ways the tool can be used.

ChatGPT is a popular artificial intelligence chatbot, increasingly used as a conversation partner and source of information. Launched in November 2022, it answers any questions a user might have by writing an elaborate text on the topic.

Outside of basic conversations on different topics, this tool can write full academic papers and articles, poems, job applications, and even help write programming code. You can ask questions like “Explain the Big Bang Theory” or “Write a poem about love” and the chatbot answers the questions and remembers the thread of the conversation. For this purpose, the AI system makes use of huge volumes of information on the Internet.

ChatGPT is currently one of the most powerful language processing models ever created, capable of responding in different styles and even in different languages. The main distinction of this tool is its ability to respond in a natural language, similar to the language of a human being.

Millions of people have converted to this chatbot to create content, from articles, poems, and movie scripts to birthday party ideas. In just five days, ChatGPT reached over one million users, a goal that took Facebook ten months. In January 2023, the system reached 100 million monthly users.

ChatGPT is a free tool, although it provides a paid version that responds faster and continues to work during peak usage. With the immeasurable amount of interest in the tool, ChatGPT often presents a full-capacity message to those trying to access the site.

The competition: Bard

Bard’s introduction to the market is proof that Google is working on new ways to consume information online. Developed by tech giant Google, Bard is an experimental chat service that uses artificial intelligence to provide up-to-date answers.

Similar to the ChatGPT chatbot, its main goal is to answer users’ questions. This AI tool aims to combine the breadth of global knowledge with the power, intelligence, and creativity of Google’s big language models.

Google explains that Bard can help clarify, for example, new findings from Nasa’s James Webb Space Telescope to a child. The choice of this example does not seem to be unintentional: Google promises up-to-date search results, while ChatGPT knowledge extends only until 2021. The space telescope was only launched in December 2021, so Bard is one step ahead of ChatGPT.

However, unlike ChatGPT, Bard is not available worldwide. At the moment, the tool is in the testing phase and is only available for use by a group of testers. This testing phase is intended to help Google continue to learn and improve the quality and speed of Bard.

Yet, Google announces that the AI service will be available in the coming weeks, increasing speculation about the technological dispute between the two new Artificial Intelligence tools: ChatGPT and Bard.
